Beschreibung
Ms Kennedy, eine energiegeladene Erscheinung, die mit ihrer Anwesenheit jedes Podium ehrt, bringt ihre hinreißende Lebensfreude in das namensgebenden Debutalbum der Kennedy Administration ein. Egal ob es nun das funkige Eröffnungsstück „It’s Over Now,” ihre glühende Version von Al Greens „Let’s Stay Together,” die kraftvolle Interpretation von Billy Prestons „Will It Go Round in Circles” ist, ihr eigener nostalgischer Song „Mama’s Kisses“ oder andere unwiderstehliche Eigenkompositionen, wie das verführerische „Finally“, der hymnenhafte „Victory Song“ oder das altmodische throwdown „Let’s Party“ – die in Michigan geborene und in Brooklyn lebende Sängerin macht auf ihrem ersten Album einen überwältigenden Eindruck.
„Ich beschreibe sie gerne als ‚eine echte Künstlerin ohne Anlass‘.“ So formuliert es Ondre J. Pivec. Der Keyboarder, musikalische Leiter und Partner beim Songschreiben wurde in der Tschechischen Republik geboren, lebt in Brooklyn und ist gerade mit dem Sänger und Grammy-Gewinner Gregory Porter auf Tournee. „Als wir vor drei Jahren begonnen haben gemeinsam Musik zu machen, hat es in der ersten Minute zwischen uns geklickt. Es war so als wüssten wir beide ganz genau was wir machen mussten, damit es funktioniert. Es war wie Zauberei.“
Diese zauberhafte Verbindung konnte sich während ihrer langjährigen Auftritte an jedem Mittwochabend im Groove, einem Club im Herzen des Greenwich Village in New York, weiterentwickeln. Bei diesen Gigs lieferte die Kennedy Administration eine knisternde Intensität ab, die sie wie eine zeitgenössische Version von Rufus & Chaka Khan wirken läßt. Ms Kennedy und Ondre J erwiesen sich aber auch beim Schreiben von eigenen Songs als starkes Team. „Wenn es ans Schreiben von eigenen Liedern geht, sind es vor allem Ondre und ich, die zusammenarbeiten. Im Anschluss rufen wir die Jungs dazu und jeder beginnt hier und da noch etwas hinzuzufügen. Auf diese Art wird es zu einer gemeinsamen kreativen Arbeit der Gruppe.“
Die Jungs, das sind der Bassist Chelton Grey und der altgediente Drummer Nathaniel Townsley, der schon mit Joe Zawinul, Richard Bona, Will Downing und Alejandro Sanz auf der Bühne gestanden ist. Zusammen mit Ms Kennedy, Ondre J, der großartigen Backgroundsängerin Stephanie Fischer und als besonderem Gast, dem Harmonika-Spezialisten Gregoire Maret, der im verführerischen Bossa Nova „Don’t Forget to Smile“ mit von der Partie ist, erzeugen sie auf ihrem groovigen Debutalbum eine unwiderstehliche Atmosphäre.
Ms Kennedy kombiniert nicht nur ‚Fun‘ mit Funk, sondern zaubert in ihren eigenen Liedern auch einige sehr nachdenkliche Texte und Botschaften hervor. „Es ist für mich auch ein bisschen Neuland, was das Songschreiben angeht,“ gesteht sie. “In einigen meiner Songs spreche ich sehr offen über eine ganze Reihe von Themen, aber normalerweise spare ich dabei immer eine Sache aus – Kummer, eine New Yorker Spezialität und die tagtäglichen Mühen hier zu leben, das Gefühl der Einsamkeit das diese Großstadt hervorrufen kann.“
In „Mama’s Kisses,” zum Beispiel, geht es um das Verlangen nach diesem schwer fassbaren Gefühl des ‚sich zuhause fühlen‘, das sich nicht immer einstellt, wenn man alleine im Big Apple lebt. „Ich spreche mit vielen meiner Freunde und wir fahren immer noch gerne nach Hause weil es uns gut tut“ sagt Kennedy. „In diesem Song geht es also um meinen Wunsch nach diesem speziellen Ort an dem ich spüre – hier gehöre ich hin. Und ich kann nicht wirklich behaupten, dass ich diesen Ort hier in New York gefunden habe, oder jedenfalls jetzt noch nicht. Die Song ist für mich daher auch ein bisschen Wunschdenken.“
Ms Kennedy wurde auf einem Bauernhof mit Schweinen, Hühnern und Kühen in der Kleinstadt Belleville, außerhalb von Detroit in Michigan geboren. „Später sind wir in die Gemeinde Saginaw übersiedelt und haben ein typisches Vorstadtleben geführt – ein extrem konservatives und beschütztes Leben im Bibel Belt“, erinnert sie sich.
Nachdem sie einige Jahre in Chicago gelebt hatte, übersiedelte sie im Februar 2011 nach New York, was damals als 6-wöchicher Aufenthalt geplant war, um mit der Band einer Kreuzfahrtlinie aufzutreten. „Leider ist dieser Job völlig ins Wasser gefallen und in meinem ersten Jahr in New York war ich praktisch obdachlos und schlug mich mühsam durch. Jedes Mal wenn ich die Stadt verlassen wollte, passierte etwas und ich blieb wieder hängen. Eine ganze Weile lang war ich richtig wütend. Ich wollte eigentlich nicht in New York sein. Ich fühlte mich nicht zuhause. Aber siehe da, es hat doch noch geklappt.“
Dieses Gefühl, trotz starken Gegenwinds zu bestehen, ist im „Victory Song“ besonders deutlich zu spüren. Kennedy erklärt dazu, „Ich habe beschlossen einen Song zu schreiben, der sagt, trotz all der Enttäuschungen und gelegentlichen Niederlagen werde ich es schaffen. Wir haben diesen Song bei Rockwood gespielt, nur mit Gesang und Piano und ich bekomme noch heute eine Gänsehaut wenn ich daran denke, wie das Publikum den Refrain ‚I will overcome‘ gemeinsam mit mir gesungen hat. In einem Raum voller singender Menschen zu sein war elektrisierend. Viele der Leute hatten Tränen in den Augen, weil es eine so kraftvolle Botschaft ist, nicht nur für mich, sondern für Menschen in allen Lebenslagen.“
Von einer universell gültigen Botschaft zur nächsten; die Kennedy Administration wechselt den Gang und bleibt gut unterwegs mit der mitreißenden Dance Nummer „Let’s Party,“ worin die optimistische Stimmung von „Celebrate“ der Band Earth, Wind & Fire oder „Let’s go Crazy,“ dem Purple Rain Klassiker von Prince beschwört wird. Kennedy erklärt dazu: „Es gibt bestimmte Nummern, da beginnen deine Füße einfach im Takt zu wippen und es macht absolut keinen Unterschied wo man ist‘. ‚Let’s Party’ ist einer von diesen Songs. Ich habe ältere Leute, junge Menschen und sogar Babys dazu tanzen gesehen. Jeder ist davon begeistert. Es würde mir gefallen, wenn dieses Lied bei Familienfesten, auf Abschlussfeiern, Hochzeiten und Bar Mitzwas gespielt würde. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass Menschen zu dem Song im Fitness Center ihr Training absolvieren oder ihn spielen, nachdem ihr Team den Super Bowl gewonnen hat. Ich will, dass der Song der Soundtrack zu ihrem Lebens ist.“
Vom Funk throwdown zum verführerischen Bossa Nova, vom nachdenklichen Erzählen zum ultimativen Party-Song, die Kennedy Administration zeigt eine außergewöhnliche Vielseitigkeit auf ihrem vielversprechenden Debutalbum. Kennedy formuliert es so: „Ich will nicht, dass wir in eine Schublade gesteckt werden. Ich brauche diese Freiheit und Flexibilität. Wir lieben Musik wirklich, also warum sollten wir nicht alles ausprobieren?“
Die Sängerin, die heute in Brooklyn lebt und mit ihrem ersten Album Kennedy Administration so viel Eindruck macht, fügt hinzu: „Nach meiner Übersiedlung nach New York war ich oft mutlos, aber ich habe einfach nicht aufgegeben. Meine Eltern waren nicht glücklich, dass ich keine Ausbildung gemacht habe, sondern mich nur mit der Musik beschäftigt habe. Es war schwer für sie dabei zuzusehen, wie sich ihre einzige Tochter abstrampelte. Währenddessen war ich selbst nur versessen darauf aufzutreten und irgendwie Musik zu machen, ohne Mentor und ohne irgendwen, der mich in eine Richtung gedrängt hätte. Für mich ist diese Band daher ein Beispiel dafür, was entsteht, wenn man seinem Herzen folgt…wenn man seine Tränen abwischt, die Wunden versorgt und weiterkämpft.“
